Scouts can learn about sports, crafts, science, trades, business, and future careers as they earn merit badges. And each merit badge has its own pamphlet to learn! There are more than 135 merit badges, and any Scout may earn any of these at any time.
The first step is to acquire the pamphlet to learn the course and meet requirements. Pamphlets may be purchased through the BSA Scout Shop in physical form or as a digital download.
Some merit badges have time requirements to complete. For example, Personal Fitness requires a minimum of 90 days. It is best to research the requirements of badges as early in the Scout journey as possible.
Important: Although Scouts are encouraged to earn various merit badges to expand their knowledge and experience, BSA does have a list of Eagle Required Merit Badges. It is not necessary to be a Life Scout to earn these badges, but they are required to promote to Eagle Scout. It is highly advised to start earning these badges as soon as possible, as some of them have requirements that take time.
